Finding a psychotherapist for your child.
Some helpful pointers:
Finding a therapist for your child requires that you find a person that makes you comfortable. “Being comfortable” means someone who helps put you at ease, making it easier for you to begin to share personal feelings and private information about your family. Logistics (scheduling, travel, timing, etc.) can affect comfort.
Trust of a therapist, for you and your child, is different from comfort. It grows over time. The development of trust is often a slow and gradual process with “ups and downs.” The goal with a therapist is that you feel understood, heard, listened to, not rushed, and supported. Remember, your child's therapist is your partner in working together to help your child.
Here is some useful information to prepare before your call.
· what you see as your child’s main issues
· how long you have been seeing these issues
· why you are calling now
· times that you would be available for an appointment
· how you found out about the agency or therapist.
